Monarch Butterflies are heading to Dallas

Residents are encouraged to be on the lookout for Monarch Butterflies in Dallas parks, as the peak of their migration moves south. Monarchs migrate back and forth between Mexico and the Midwest every year.

The Parks and Recreation Department oversees a number of pollinator friendly gardens with native plant species that provide energy-rich nectar to keep the Monarchs going. These parks include Crawford, Kiest, Everglade, Lake Cliff, Kidd Springs, RP Brooks, and Northhaven Trail. Other areas with Monarch sightings include White Rock Lake, Harry S. Moss Park, Reverchon Park, Bachman Lake Greenbelt, and Mountain Creek Lake.  You can also check for Monarchs at the City Hall Pollinator Garden and Pike Park.

The National Wildlife Federation, in partnership with Monarch Joint Venture, will host a youth webinar called Meet the Monarchs on Oct. 1. And on Oct. 8, community members can locate and identify different species of vegetation and wildlife at BioBlitz. part of a city-wide initiative called the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge.
